ZOLDER, Belgium: Italian veteran Mario Cipollini came out
of retirement to win his first world championship road title
with a superlative sprint finish Sunday.
Cipollini announced his retirement in July after he was
not invited to the Tour de France, but reconsidered his
decision two months ago.
New records
British marathon runner Paula Radcliffe sits behind a
sign with her world record time of 2:17:18 as she awaits the
start of the award ceremony after winning the 25th Chicago
Marathon Monday. She shattered the previous women’s record by
one minute and 29 seconds.
On Sunday, Viktoria Klimina of Russia set a course record
in the Ocean State Marathon in Providence, , Rhode Island,
finishing in 2 hours, 28 minutes, 30 seconds. The previous
mark of 2:30:28 was set last year by Tatyana Pozdnykov of
Russia.
