SIX stellar university students were chosen to fly to New Zealand on Wednesday to collect the "light of the new century" torch from Massey University on New Year's Day and bring it to Beijing in preparation for the 21st World University Games.
Massey University, the largest university in New Zealand, is said to be the first university in the world to see the dawn of the new century.

Liu Wei, a former member of the China National Women Table Tennis Team, has won many world championships.
Deng Lei, 15, born of a poor family, was sent back to school thanks to financial aid from Project Hope. This year, he was recruited by the Juvenile Class of Chinese University of Science and Technology and became the first university juvenile student supported by Project Hope.\
A Yinu, a Kazak, was born in Daban City in Xinjiang Autonomous Region. She was recruited to study in Central University for Nationalities. She is the first university student from the city since the founding of New China.
The torch collected from New Zealand will be delivered to Beijing on 2nd January and placed in the China Century Sundial, together with another torch spontaneously collected from Beijing.
The universiade is a world sports event sponsored by the Federation of International University Sports. It aims to promote the development of friendship between university students worldwide and enhance their physical culture.
China has participated in the event since the Chinese University Sports Association joined the federation in 1975.(Richard Han)
