VISITING Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Tung Chee-hwa declared in Shenzhen on December 30 that closer co-operation is expected to inject new life into the economies of the two cities.
While meeting with Mayor of Shenzhen Yu Youjun on the same day, Tung reaffirmed that strengthening co-operation between the two places has become more critical in the new century.
Yu welcomed his distinguished guest and looked back on the development of co-operation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong. He belived that their meeting together would play an active role in pushing the two sides to seek closer partnership on different levels and in more fields in the new century.
Yu briefed that Shenzhen is expected to become a regional economic, financial, logistics, tourism and high-tech centre in the coming five to 10 years.
To achieve these purposes and make sustainable development of the two adjacent cities for sure, leaders from the two sides suggested promoting co-operation in environmental protection, joint efforts to curb pollution of water resources and infrastructure construction, especially cross-border checkpoints construction and management.
Moreover, co-operation in finance, exhibition, trade, information and transportation will also be enhanced to make Shenzhen the bridge of import and export between Hong Kong and the mainland and expand the business scope of Hong Kong investors and products.
