New year's resolutions

AS the New Year unveils, people from all walks of life in SZ are looking forward to realizing new objectives. Shenzhen Daily, therefore, prepared this special report on the New Year's resolutions for the first year in the new century.
Zhang Song,
Centenarian
I was born in 1900 in Pingshan Township, SZ, where I spent the first half of my life. When the Japanese invaders occupied my hometown, I had to move to Hong Kong. After a few years, I came back because of my deep love of my hometown.
At that time my daughter and son-in-law both joined in the revolution. Many of their underground meetings were held in my home.
By far I have lived in Tianbei for the past 20 years. In 1982, with the money my son sent me from England, I was able to build a four-storey building, the tallest building in my community. Over the past few years, Shenzhen has gone great changes. I love my hometown even more. My relatives had asked to live with them in Hong Kong and England. But I love my hometown. I love to stay in Shenzhen.
But I had an eye operation for my cataract. When I fully recover, I will go to visit the statue of Deng Xiaoping on the Lotus Hill. I will sing my Hakka folk song for him. I know that without him we would not have had such a good life. I want to see with my own eyes the beautiful life people leave in Shenzhen.
Xiao Junfeng
The first Olympic gold medallist
I am very proud to be a Shenzhener. I hope I can make a greater contribution to the city in the new year.
I had both successes and failures in the past year. I was very happy to be the first Olympic champion from Shenzhen.
But the glamour belonged to the past. I am gearing myself to new objectives. I will do my best to win at the Southeast Asian Games and the Ninth National Games.
Yao Xiaoming
Director of Corneas Treatment of Shenzhen Eye Hospital
It has been 10 years since I started working as doctor in Shenzhen. I was involved in every process of organizing the city's cornea donation. On June 13, 1999, I removed corneas from Xiang Chunmei who passed away on that day and transplanted them to two recipients. This was the first organ donation in Shenzhen. And since then many people have joined in the glorious organ donors.
So far hundreds of thousands of people have expressed their willingness to donate their corneas and bodies after death.
My colleagues and I have performed 130 cornea transplants. Unfortunately local donors only contributed 10 corneas. The others came from cornea banks in other cities.
I hope Shenzhen will become the first city in China to make laws for organ donation. I also hope that Shenzhen will become a city with the most cornea donation and transplants in the country.
Matthew Malowany,editor, Shenzhen Daily
WOW, 2001, that's a very big number. When I was a kid I always thought that by now the sky would be full of flying cars and the world would be at peace. I was totally wrong on those predictions, but nobody's perfect.
So instead of trying to predict the future or change the world, I think this year I will just try to appreciate life. For one thing, I hope to marry the girl of my dreams in 2001. By a stoke of amazingly good luck, I have not only met my dream girl, but have managed to convince her to tolerate me enough to be my girlfriend. If my good luck continues, I can dare to hope that she will deign to become my wife.
I'm also hoping to write a book in 2001 as well. This of course depends on me having enough spare time - and not too much tension in my life. To be honest, I'm not optimistic these conditions can be met, but I plan to at least give it a try. Maybe I can write about an international marriage. That's a subject I think I'll be getting to know very well this year.
No doubt 2001 will be a very eventful year, not just for the world but for myself as well. I'm sure a lot of things will happen. But whatever events do take place, I hope that I can face them with dignity, patience, intelligence and above all courage. Perhaps that is my dearest wish not only for the new year, but the new century as well.
