Auto market
BEIJING: According to the estimation by the sales of the Shanghai Volkswagon Automobile Co Ltd, about 660,000 cars are needed in the Chinese car market in the year 2001.
Cars at a cost of 90,000 to 150,000 yuan per piece, as the survey indicates, have attracted the attention of most of the private car consumers, accounting for nearly 40 per cent of the total needed.
Investment hub
HONG KONG: Foreign enterprises are growing in numbers to invest in Hong Kong as attracted by improved environment for investment. It features an open and quick information, efficient and clean government, simple taxation, complete infrastructure of banks and financial institutes and legal administration with the exception of high rents and costs in production in Hong Kong.
Duty-free shops
BEIJING: Sources from the national duty-free trades working conference say that China will open four new duty-free shops within three years in Shanghai, Dalian, Qingdao and Xiamen in the coastal areas. At present, the country has only one city duty-free shop set up in Beijing.
Militia leader
JAKARTA: The trial of East Timorese Militia leader Eurico Guterres opened under heavy security at the North Jakarta district court yesterday.
Guterres was charged with ordering his men to take back weapons surrendered by pro-integration fighters to the police in September last year.
Death toll
DHAKA: The death toll from the launch disaster last Friday in the river Meghna near Chandpur town, some 169 kilometres southeast to Dhaka, rose to 153 with the recovery of 42 more bodies till 2pm yesterday, the United News of Bangladesh reported.
Resuming rescue operation in the morning, police and local people found the 42 mutilated bodies floating in the river within 20 to 25 kilometres of the spot of the launch mishap.
