City reveres Deng
|
IT has almost become a tradition in Shenzhen that people pay special respect to Deng Xiaoping, the chief architect of China's reform and opening up on noted occasions. This New Year's Day was no exception.
While enjoying their family reunions, many local people made it a point to visit the Statue of Deng Xiaoping at the Lotus Hill. People gathered around the statue, taking pictures and paying respect.
The new satue has indeed become a leading destination for holiday-making locals and many visitors from outside. "Without him, we would not be enjoying such a wonderful life." This is a common comment you hear under the statue.
"It is so memorable that so many people come to visit our late leader, this great man Deng Xiaoping," a visitor said after taking a picture of the statue on Monday.
The big portrait of Deng Xiaoping at Hongling Road also attracted a lot of visitors on New Year's Day. Set in the background of high-rises, Deng Xiaoping smiles to the city. People interpret his smile as satisfaction and encouragement. Young people find it encouraging to make New Year's resolutions under his portrait. A newly wed couple even made their marital oath under the portrait on Monday.
The fig tree planted by Deng Xiaoping in the Fairy Lake Botanical Gardens was also the centre of attention during the New Year's holiday. A group of students made a special resolution for the New Year: to bring peace to the world, to make our environment cleaner and to make our society more prosperous. (Zhang Lin)
