Old Taiwan general in SZ
|
LUO ZEHUA, a veteran general from Taiwan, is comfortably spending his golden years in the Luohu Social Welfare Centre. At the start of the new century, he wished a bright future to the country and a smooth reunification of Taiwan and the motherland.
Though already 91 years old, the general recalled his life with a clear mind. In 1937, he joined the renowned Huangpu Military Academy. Upon graduation in 1941, he took up the rear supply service in Kuomintang army. In 1948 he moved to Taiwan, where he was conferred a rank of major general and served in the National Security Department until the 1970s.
He recalled that Xu Xiangqian, one of the ten PLA marshals in China, was his former schoolmate in Huangpu Military Academy. "But we took different ways. Now many old schoolmates have passed away," the old man said in deep contemplation.
One thing worth mentioning is that he got through the cruelty of about 100 battles without any injuries.
More interestingly, a retired Communist Party cadre once living in the centre became his bosom friend. Though different belief holders, the two shared many interests such as reading and singing Beijing opera. When the old cadre passed away last year, Luo was upset for a long time.
At present, the old general lives in Shenzhen and has a colourful life. He is interested in reading, painting and ink calligraphy. He reads books by Jin Yong, a famous swordsman fiction writer.
