Shenzhen cleans seawater

ENVIRONMENTAL protection authorities at district and municipal levels will launch a comprehensive campaign to control sources of pollution along the beaches along the city's eastern coastline this month.
Sources with the municipal environmental protection bureau say the overhaul will target businesses and individuals that cause direct or indirect pollution to the sea.
According to officials, major sources of pollution come from industrial activities and daily waste. However in recent years, the service industry including holiday villas and hotels has become a major sources of pollution.
Regulatory authorities will, first of all, find out the polluting companies' business operation, current level of discharge and pollution prevention measures, according to officials.
During the overhaul, authorities will determine the appropriate level of discharge for polluting companies. Regulators will closely monitor the discharge outlets of those companies who have pollution processing facilities. For those who have not, they will be ordered to put things right and comply with relevant rules, regulators said.
All companies will be required to meet designated discharge levels by June this year.
The overall city plan categorized the waters into two functional areas with two corresponding water quality standards. The sea farm and water sports area is supposed to meet the second national level and industrial area the third national level.
