Transplant restores hope

Song Yingwen
WHAT Ma Fuming, the writer of the song Hope of Life, left the world after his death was not only his cornea that had saved four blind people from darkness and his body for medical use, but also a completely different life to Lin Zhongqiu, the composer of the song.
Lin, who had been suffered from blindness resulted from a failed cataract extractor surgery for 27 years, recently recovered his lost eyesight after a successful surgery conducted by Dr Yao Xiaoming, the doctor of the Shenzhen Hospital of Ophthalmology, under the support of the Doctor's Glass Co Ltd and celebrated his first New Year's Eve in brightness.
"Had it not been for the song, I would have no chance to meet these nice people and witness the arrival of the new century with my own eyes," Lin said.
But his gratitude for these people, including Ma, is much more than the gratefulness for regaining the eyesight. "They've brought me new thoughts on life," Lin stated.
To Lin, a victim of congenital cataract who supports himself by being a massager, though open and optimistic in nature, life is already a success if only he can make it a safe and independent one. But things were changed after he met Ma and Yao.
"I learned from Ma that even a sick man like him can make contribution to the world and bring hope to people. I thought that time: though blind, I can do something else. And later when I received the kind offer from Dr Yao, who had found me a financial sponsor for the surgery and offer to carry out the surgery, I was deeply touched by their sincere desire to help the underprivileged people. They've brought me a different life and now I must do something in return."
To repay all the kindness he'd received from the doctors, Lin is planning to write a song for the hospital, extending his gratitude to these dedicated doctors and nurses. To return the society, he will devote himself writing songs for the blind and disable, hoping to bring some joy to their life. But right now the most urgent need for him is to start learning reading and writing Chinese.
"I think my life will be completely different from now on because I have a different passion for it," Lin said.
