Panic blamed for deaths in cafe blaze
|
A PANICKED stampede and blocked emergency exits were being blamed for the carnage in the New Year's Eve cafe fire that left nine revellers dead and 30 critically ill with first degree burns in Holland.
A further 60 people were injured, many of them when they jumped from windows of the second-floor cafe in Volendam, near Amsterdam.
Officials believe the blaze was caused by Christmas lights on the ceiling setting fire to decorations, which then fell onto revellers. But the building was only partially burnt, confirming reports that the deaths were caused by "severe panic conditions" rather than the extent of the fire.
