WASHINGTON: Casey FitzRandolph became double champion as he won both the 500m and 1,000m races on the first day of the US Speedskating Championships in West Allis, Wisconcin on Saturday. FitzRandolph won the 500m title in 36.11 seconds and the 1,000min 1:11.54, beating Joey Cheek to the second twice with times of 36.28 and 1:11.75 respectively.
Qatar Open
KUWAIT: Marcelo Rios of Chile advanced to the Qatar Open finals, beating Vladimir Voltchkov of Belarus 6-1, 6-3 on Saturday in the US$1 million tournament at Doha, Qatar.
In doubles final, second seeds Mark Knowles of the Bahamas and Daniel Nestor of Canada beat Juan Balcells of Spain and Andrei Olhovsky of Russia 6-3, 6-1.
Rally
PARIS: Jean-Louis Schlesser of France stayed on target for a third straight victory by winning Saturday's 305-kilometre sixth special stage on the sixth day of the Paris-Dakar Rally in his self-designed Schlesser Buggy. Schlesser clocked three hours 17 minutes 14 seconds for the special stage of the 608-km leg in Morocco from Ouarzazate to Goulimine, edging out his Schlesser teammate Jose-Maria Servia by 42 seconds.
