Iverson scores 54 points
|
ALLEN IVERSON keeps taking his game to new heights and carrying the Philadelphia 76ers along with him.
One night after scoring 41 points in a Philadelphia rout of Seattle, Iverson poured in a career-best 54 points -- more than half his team's total -- in a 107-103 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday as the 76ers improved to an NBA-best 24-8.
Iverson hit 20-of-30 shots from the field and 10-of-13 from the free-throw line for his third career 50-point game and second at Cleveland's Gund Arena.
“When your jumper is on, the basket seems like an ocean and the basketball seems like a rock,” Iverson said. “That is the way it felt tonight.”
Iverson scored Philadelphia's first 13 points of the third quarter on three jumpers, a 3-pointer, a three-point play and a free throw.
“He was amazing,” Sixers coach Larry Brown said. “He shot the ball as well as you can shoot it because there weren't a lot of easy shots. People had a hand in his face.”
Aaron McKie chipped in 20 points and nine assists and Theo Ratliff added 12 points, nine rebounds and blocked eight shots for Philadelphia, which extended its winning streak to six games with its eighth straight road win.
Despite Iverson's Herculean effort, the Cavaliers kept it close. Cleveland closed within 103-99 on a three-point play by Lamond Murray but could not get any closer.
Andre Miller had 22 points and 14 assists and Clarence Weatherspoon added 19 points and 16 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who have lost three in a row and eight of nine following a six-game winning streak.(Xinhua)
