SZ takes lead in pharmaceutical industry
|
SHENZHEN has topped other cities in Guangdong Province in the output and sales of medicine for successive four years, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported on Friday.
For the past 20 years, the city has seen the country's pacesetting medicine producers spring up, such as 999 Group, Kexing Bioproducts and Wanji, the SZSZD reported.
Statistics indicate that the medicine output in the city amounts to 8.9 billion yuan (US$1 billion) last year, representing an increase of 23 per cent over 1999. The leading producer is 999 Group --- also the No 1 medicine maker in China --- whose output accounts for more than half of the city's total.
The Wanji company sold products of over one billion yuan last year, topping any other companies in China in sales of health medicine.
Kexing Bioproducts is now China's leading producer of interferon, accounting for more than 60 per cent of the domestic market share.
Other brand names such as Shenzhen Accord, Zhong Lian and Neptunus are all accelerating their expansion into other provinces, according to the SZSZD report. So far, they have achieved what they expected, the report said.
Asked how the city has managed to maintain such a strong growth momentum in the pharmaceutical industry, an official with the city's economic development bureau said that scale expansion and huge high-tech input are the major driving forces. The pharmaceutical industry, especially the biopharmaceutical industry, is expected to become a vital component of SZ's planned high-tech development, the official said.(Wu Yan)
