English can be fun
|
apple 苹果
Apples have white juicy flesh(1) which is very nourishing(2) and healthful. So there is some truth in this saying: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away(3)."
The apple pie is a very popular food in the West. Then, what can "apple-pie order" mean? It means "neat and tidy". We know some boys' rooms are always in a mess(4). In contrast, many girls always keep their rooms in apple-pie order.
You may have had the experience that something unexpected upsets your applecart(5). Suppose you have got everything ready for an outing. But then, when you are about to set out, it begins to rain. The sudden change in the weather upsets your applecart.
Notes:
1. flesh: 果肉。
2. nourishing: 营养丰富。
3. 俗语“日食一苹果,医生远离我。”
4. in a mess:乱糟糟。
5. 安排。(SD-Agencies)
