Photonic park takes shape

Winton Dong, Han Ximin
SHENZHEN Photonic Industrial Park, located in the midwest of Futian Free Trade Zone, broke ground yesterday.
The park, with a total area of 150,000 square metres, has easy transportation, good water and power supply, good telecom facilities, postal service, sewage system and other infrastructural constructions.
Moreover, the grand opening of FibX (Shenzhen) Ltd, an optical and fibre producer, in the industrial park yesterday further promoted the city's image and brought the city much closer to its dream to become an optical fibre research and development centre.
FibX is said to be a wholly-owned subsidiary of JDS Uniphase (JDSU) Group, a Canadian company which is the world's largest manufacturer of fibre and optic components.
With the support of advanced technologies and production processes, FibX manufactures fibre-optic components and modules such as isolator, coupler, attenuator, optical switch and others.
“The Shenzhen company has about 13,000 square metres of new factory production area and 1,400 work stations, which have the capacity to produce 1.8 million components and modules every year. It is also ISO-9001 certified and has well-established production, testing and quality control systems to produce quality products,” said Charles Abbe, president of JDSU Group, at the opening ceremony.
Besides FibX, some other optical fibre producers such as US-based New Focus Pacific and Hong Kong-based Optech Communication Component have also registered in the park.
Vice-Mayor of Shenzhen Song Hai, who attended yesterday's ceremony, said the introduction of these firms will make Shenzhen an important part in the Guangdong Optical Valley and give still more impetus to the city's high and new technology development in the future.
In another development, the 2nd China International Photoelectronic, Laser Apparatus and Equipment Fair, sponsored by China Science and Technology Association and China Optics Society, opened at China Hi-Tech Fair Exhibition Centre yesterday.
The fair manifested the lastest achievements of nearly 200 photoelectronic enterprises from the US, Germany and China.
Nearly 20 academicians and experts were invited to give top-notch speeches on the current situation and future development of China' photoelectronic industry at a two-day seminar on Shenzhen's optics and photoelectronics development strategy, which was spontaneously held yesterday.
Ren Zhouming, deputy office chief of the organizing committee, said the fair, which basically manifested the cutting-edge technology of photoelectronic industry, would strengthen the exchanges and co-operation of China's enterprises and research institutions with their international counterparts.
