SZ strives for China-made ICs
|
OOVER 20 companies in Shenzhen are currently capable of chip designing and manufacturing and therefore are independent of their foreign chip suppliers, a Shenzhen Special Zone Daily (SZSZD) report said on Monday.
The city's major chipmakers listed by the report include Zhongxing Telecom Co Ltd, Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, Shenzhen Advanced Science & Technology Enterprise Group and Konka Group.
Konka Group announced last October its success in producing self-designed MCU chips that enable the company to become independent of its foreign suppliers, marking a significant breakthrough in China's colour TV technology.
And recently, Ark Pioneer Microelectronics (Shenzhen) Co Ltd received a note certifying that the company's newly developed Dual Port Sram (static random access memory) is the first very large-scale integrated circuit (IC) for telecommunications ever made in China, another SZSZD report said yesterday.
Striving for China-made ICs has become a persistent pursuit for these local companies. With their strength in research and development, some of them like Huawei and Zhongxing have constantly upgraded their products and are catching up with the world's advanced chip developers.
The self-made chips have helped enhance the two companies' competitiveness by saving substantial purchase costs. They have also helped them to penetrate into more than 20 countries and regions. For last year alone, the combined sales of these two companies hit 30 billion yuan (US$3.6 billion).
SZ is China's largest IT base. Its IT production output is one seventh of that of the country. Some experts said that once SZ switches on its production lines of advanced chips, many related industries and products in the country would benefit. And it would also help attract investment.
The city has given priority to building chip production lines and is expected to construct a production base for the very large scale IC chips in the second half of this year, the SZSZD report said, quoting sources from an economic working conference which convened in the city recently. Favourable policies and measures are also expected to be adopted by the city in supporting the development of IC designing, the report said. (Wu Yan)
