Largest Chinese chessboard
|
HAVE you ever seen a Chinese chessboard as large as three basketball courts? At present, a chessboard in Haishan Park, Yantian District has attracted the interest of many visitors as it is said to be the largest of its kind in the nation, even in the world
Situated at the foot of a hill slope in Haishan Park, the chessboard covers an area of more than 600 square metres, 26 metres in length and 24 metres in width. The ground is in granite, with water curtain and spring as the Chu River and Han Boundary. The most interesting things are those huge chess pieces, all made of wood and with beautiful Chinese characters curved on the surface. Each is 80 centimetres in diameter, 75 kilograms in weight. And they have been processed to be antiseptic and waterproof. Not like those in cement, the wooden pieces can be moved by two people, thus can be used in real chess contest.
The park has applied to the Shanghai Office of Guinness Book of Records to list its incredible chessboard as "the largest chessboard in the world".
