Zheng popular in city
|
IN Shenzhen, a city famous for its economic development, it seems strange that there is about 10,000 people fell in love with a traditional instrument, Zheng, a 21- or 25-stringed plucked instrument in some ways similar to the zither.
Zheng, which always has been listed with chess, painting, and calligraphy as four necessary skills for literary people in ancient China, are now really creeping into the life of Shenzheners silently.
"Now, we can sell over 500 Zhengs a year instead of the less than 100 at the beginning", said Yan Xiaoping, a clerk from a Zheng producing factory based in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province. Yan is a folk music fan.
"More and more people came to realize the beauty of our folk music," she said.
"Compared to other traditional instruments, Zheng is relatively easy to learn, especially for adults. And in recent years, a return to Chinese classical culture has become a trend, which boost the revival of traditional music," she added.
Miss Sun, a local teacher, has desired to learn playing Zheng when she was still an undergraduate. Now her dream came true. "I love all classical things, classical music, classical literature, all of them. "
Miss Lee, who learned playing piano before, now is turning to Zheng because it is easier for her. She said she has always wanted to learn to play an instrument so that she can entertain both herself and her friends.(Rena Qin)
