SZ sees record export

SHENZHEN leads China in exports for eight consecutive years, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported yesterday.
Exports last year rose 22.3 per cent to US$34.5 billion, driven by increased foreign demand for Shenzhen's electronic information products, the report said.
Statistics released at the city's work meeting on economic and foreign trade also indicate that the total trade volume reached US$63.8 billion in 2000, up 26.5 per cent over 1999.
Speaking at the meeting, Director of the Municipal Trade Development Bureau Wei Jinkun disclosed that the city intends to lift a ban over the number of enterprises engaging in foreign trade in line with the international practices to meet the challenges from China's impending entry into the World Trade Organization. All the domestic enterprises in Shenzhen with a registered capital of three million yuan (US$0.36 million) or more will be granted the right to do foreign trade.
Mayor of Shenzhen Yu Youjun attended Wednesday's meeting. He urged companies concerned to try every means to expand exports and optimize the export structure in 2001 so as to lay a good foundation for the city's Fifth Five-Year Plan.
China's total trade volume amounted to US$474.3 billion in 2000, the highest since 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded, the Xinhua News Agency reported on Wednesday.
Exports were valued at US$249.2 billion, up 27.8 per cent, while imports totalled US$225.1 billion, up 35.8 per cent. The year 2000 saw a favourable balance of US$24.1 billion, according to the Xinhua report. (SD News)
