War against polluted rivers
|
A WAR against the polluted rivers has been launched in Shenzhen to restore the rivers' clarity.
SZ has 160 rivers of different sizes, and five of them are in drainage areas of over 100 square kilometres. Many of the rivers have been contaminated to different degrees.
On Wednesday, the Standing Committee of Shenzhen Municipal People's Congress convened to examine practices and policies concerning the issue of river pollution.
Zhang Gaoli, secretary of SZ Municipal Committee of the CPC and the city's top legislator, said some serious problems exist in SZ's environmental protection. He urged the concerned departments to give priority to environmental protection and sustainable development.
A clean-up scheme was discussed at the meeting. According to the scheme, by 2005, one hundred per cent of the city's source water for drinking purpose will reach the hygienic standard set by the State Council, and waters of some big rivers that flow through SZ to other cities will reach the hygienic standards set by Guangdong Province. The waters of other rivers will have to meet the standard for sightseeing purpose.
A total of 7.3 billion yuan (US$0.876 billion) will be needed for the clean-up project. The municipal government will allocate part of it, and the rest will be pooled from such sources as bank loans and foreign capital. Higher levy for sewage treatment is also suggested.(Wu Yan)
