THE production volume of local fibre-related companies, including Shenzhen-based Huawei Technologies and Zhongxing Telecom, reached 18 billion yuan last year, setting up a solid platform for the development photon technology, which is considered to be the next-stage IT development.
Rao Jian, office director of Guangzhou Information Modernization Leading Group, said at the 2nd China International Photo-electronic Laser Apparatus and Equipment Fair which closes today in Shenzhen that Shenzhen is the right place to develop and commercialize photon technology. "In addition to flexible market mechanism, personnel and technology are vital factors determining the development of photon industry," said Rao.
The alliance of international leading optical fibre product manufacturers including FibX, US-based New Focus Pacific, E-tek and Hong Kong-based Opteck Communication in Shenzhen Photonic Industrial Park in Futian Free Trade Zone will strengthen SZ's competition in this edge.
"Shenzhen has the ability to train its own technical people," said Rao. The fibre communication research base in Shenzhen University headed by Niu Hanben, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, had started operation and Lucent opened its optical net research institute in Shnzhen Hi-tech Industrial Park.
The development and popularization of Internet and computers have increased the demand for communication products and components of optical apparatus. Enterprises and governments of different levels regarded it as a rare chance to scale new heights and foster competitive edge for the 21st century.
Guangdong Photon Valley targets to gain 500 billion yuan production volume through ten years' effort and create 600,000 to one million jobs.
Photonic industry covers six fields including optical communication, fibre and laser medical treatment equipment. Shanghai, Wuhan and Changchun are also busying building their own photon valleys.
