Anson Chan exalted

HONG KONG Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa on Friday praised Administrative Secretary Anson Chan for the contributions and achievements she has made in her term of office.
Tung told a media session at the Central Government Offices that Chan, who just announced that she will retire in April, has made many contributions and achievements in her public service over almost four decades.
In the last three and half years, as administrative secretary, Chan has made an immense contribution to Hong Kong's smooth transition and to the implementation of the "one country, two systems" principle, the chief executive said.
She has also played a key role in leading the Hong Kong civil service through the transition contributing to Hong Kong's stability, Tung said. As head of the civil service, she has put in place a series of civil service reforms, he added. "This will enhance the standard of public administration in Hong Kong," Tung emphasized.
"Chan has provided me with excellent advice and support in different spheres of government policy initiatives," Tung noted. "Together with the team of principal officials, we have overcome the Asian financial turmoil, revived the economy and launched reforms in key areas such as education and municipal services."
"I have treasured the wise counsel and advice Chan has given me over the last three and a half years," he said. "It was my original intention to retain her service until June of 2002. When she requested to retire early, I tried to persuade her to stay on, but I could not change her position to retire. After very careful consideration, I have accepted her request and I respect her decision."
Chen said her departure should not affect the smooth functioning of the government. "I shall continue to work closely with the chief executive in the good governance of Hong Kong and in serving the community."(Xinhua)
