Citizens embrace organ donation

OVER 150 citizens have joined the Shenzhen Red Cross Association and volunteered to be organ donors during a two-week signature drive launched by the Shenzhen Red Cross Association and related organizations, an official with the Association for Volunteered Organ Donors (AVOD) told Shenzhen Daily yesterday.
The second round of the signature drive has received favourable support from Shenzheners since its debut last week, said Cui Congzheng, head of the AVOD under the Shenzhen Red Cross Association, at the Shenzhen Library yesterday. Once again, it has captivated a general public rapidly warming to the idea of organ donation. Dozens of people have visited the little booth where application forms were being handed out.
The forms were flying off the shelves, but Cui said this was not good enough. According to Cui, Shenzheners have a more accepting attitude towards donating organs thanks to their openness to new ideas and high level of education. “But the ratio of volunteer donors in our country is still very low compared with that in other countries. What's more, we don't even have a legal system to support organ donation," he said.
By launching such campaigns, he and his colleagues hope to convince people that donating organs is a noble act, and at the same time urge the early establishment of a comprehensive and sound legal system in the cities as well as in the rural areas.
The drive will run to May 8 every Sunday afternoon in downtown Shenzhen.
