8-hr volunteer work proposed

EMBRACING a grand vision for the 21st Century, Shenzhen's volunteers met on Saturday to propose that every citizen do eight hours of volunteer work each year. "Let us begin the new century by volunteering," they said. "Let us make concerted efforts to give more fragrance to the flowering of Shenzhen."
Raising their fists, the volunteers took an oath: "I will be an active participant in serving society to help make progress in building our home city." On that same day, thousands of volunteers in uniforms, spread across the city, did different jobs to clean up SZ.
Liu Tao, vice-secretary of the SZ Municipal Committee of the CPC, took part in the cleaning work. He said that in the past decade the city's volunteers have done much to the people and society as a whole. They have set a good example in altruism and in giving love and help. He asked all citizens to follow their example.
