New invention restores quiet

Yang Yunfei
NOISE has become one of the most pervasive pollutants in many Chinese cities due to constant construction and the ever increasing number of vehicles.
More and more city dwellers are sorely afflicted with a constant annoyance of noise pollution from traffic, jet planes, construction equipment and manufacturing, to name just a few.
The problem with noise is not only that it is unwanted, but also it negatively affects human health and well being.
Medical studies show that problems related to noise include hearing loss, stress, high blood pressure, sleep loss, distraction and lost productivity, and a general reduction in the quality of life.
Thanks to a new invention by Shenzhen Power Chair Environmental Protection Technology Development Inc, modern cacophony can become a distant memory.
The device, called a noise-reducing window, uses a simple, low-tech design. Basically, it consists of a specially made window frame and several U-shaped sound traps.
The window frame can ensure enough lighting while keeping out the noise, while the sound traps can provide good ventilation.
Wen Huailing, noise expert and general manager of Shenzhen Power Chair, says he worked out most of his noise-reducing window theories in the second half of 1998.
He made several improvements to his designs and gave them to 14 families in the city's Lianhuabei residential compound to use his invention on a trial basis.
"It has been warmly received and even environmental protection officials are convinced that it can effectively reduce noise," said Wen.
Wen demonstrated his device which, it is claimed, can successfully reduce noise levels by as much as 30 decibels.
Anticipating enormous market potential for his invention, Wen said that he would market it nationwide. But he did not foresee an immediate need to expand his company's business outside the city.
"We shall first tap the local market to gain a firm foothold before expanding to other parts of the Pearl River Delta," noted Wen.
