BEIJING: The Information Office of the State Council will hold press conference for Chinese and foreign journalists once a week, starting from this year, according to Zhao Qizheng, director of the information office. Zhao disclosed the information office's latest decision at a press conference for Chinese and foreign media on Wednesday.
Independence
UNITED NATIONS: The UN will do all it can to help East Timor achieve independence before the end of 2001, Secretary-General Kofi Annan said in his latest report to the Security Council. The report, released at the UN headquarters in New York on Wednesday, said the goal "leaves little room for technical or political delays".
Uranium 236
GENEVA: Early laboratory results confirm that pieces of depleted uranium (DU) penetrators found at sites targeted by Nato during the 1999 Kosovo conflict contain Uranium 236, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) reported on Tuesday. The presence of U-236 indicates that part of the DU came from reprocessed uranium.
Internet users
BEIJING: The number of Internet users in China has skyrocketed to 22.5 million, according to a report released on Wednesday by the China Internet Network Information Centre. Meanwhile, the number of online computers reached 8.9 million.
Partnership
SEOUL: South Korea and Brazil agreed yesterday to establish a special partnership for the 21st century and to regularize consultations and high-level dialogue. During the meeting, South Korean President Kim Dae-jung and his Brazilian counterpart Fernando Henrique Cardoso promised to further develop bilateral economic and trade relations and agreed to hold regular senior-level talks between the two countries.
