Truck rams into Capitol
|
US Investigators are trying to figure out why a semi truck rammed into the California state Capitol exploding and bursting into flames late on Tuesday.
The truck slammed into the building killing the driver. There were no reports of any other injuries or fatalities.
Authorities have not identified the driver but The Sacramento Bee reported on Wednesday that the driver was 37-year-old prison parolee Mike Bowers, who reportedly had a grudge against Governor Gray Davis.
Police said the driver's body was burned beyond recognition and an autopsy will be needed to identify the body.
Davis was not in the building at the time of the accident but the state Assembly had adjourned an evening session shortly before the accident.
It was unclear what caused the truck — which was loaded with evaporated milk — to hit the building and burst into flames, but witnesses said it looked like a deliberate act rather than an accident.
Officials and witnesses say the truck drove around the Capitol block several times, then — with its horn blaring — barreled down Eleventh Street, which runs along the Capitol, and smashed into the building's south doors. It was nestled below the chambers of the Senate, which was not in session.
Witnesses believe the truck was travelling at about 112kmph before it roared onto the Capitol grounds.(SD-Agencies)
