Gas control system operational

A NEW natural gas control network system officially went online on Wednesday.
The system, which was developed by the Shenzhen Natural Gas Group, is said to be the first of its kind in China.
The system allows efficient, round-the-clock supervision of the city's four gas supply stations, two storage plants, one gas wharf and five important institutional consumers.
According to Lai Yuankai, president of the Shenzhen Natural Gas Group, clean energy consumption is vital to keeping the air fresh. To make the city's energy and fuel structure fully in accordance with ecological demands, the local government has adopted a series of rational energy policies. Priority is given to the exploitation of secondary energy resources such as natural gas, electricity and others.
Lai said that the household gas consumption rate has hit 100 per cent in Shenzhen and the city now boasts more than 1,000 kilometres of natural gas pipelines.
“Since almost all citizens' lives are affected, safety is of key importance in gas production, storage and supply,” Lai said.
To demonstrate the efficiency of the new system, Lai showed that sudden changes in pipeline pressure immediately trigger an alarm. Valves are automatically shut down and an emergency team is sent to investigate. The whole procedure takes less than two minutes.
