Diana's butler questioned on thefts
|
PRINCESS Diana's former butler was on Friday released on bail after being arrested by British police on suspicion of theft of the late princess's belongings, police sources said on Friday.
Paul Burrell, whom the princess called ``my rock'' for her devotion and loyalty, was questioned after officers raided his home in Chester, northern England, at dawn on Thursday.
Burrell was later released and ordered to report to a central London police station next month.
The arrest was one of three made after a gem-encrusted model of a boat, a wedding present to Diana and royal heir Prince Charles from the Emir of Bahrain, was found on sale in a London antique shop last year.
Diana, who was killed in a Paris car crash in 1997, referred to Burrell as “my rock” and “the boss”. During his nine years as her butler, he arranged her social engagements, chauffeured her around and served her meals.
Burrell was a long-time servant of the British royal family. He spent 12 years as a footman to Queen Elizabeth before his employment with the princess.
After her death, Burrell remained discreet about his famous employer. He turned down $1 million to write a tell-all book about Diana's tumultuous personal life, instead opting to publish two books on stylish living and entertaining.
Burrell was made redundant from his job as co-ordinator of fund-raising attempts of the Diana Memorial Fund in 1998 but has since made a career on the talk show and lecture circuit. (SD-Agencies)
