SZ ranks 4th in GDP

SHENZHEN for the first time in history climbed from sixth to fourth place in gross domestic product (GDP) rankings in 2000, topped only by Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou and followed by Tianjin and Chongqing municipalities.
Shenzhen's GDP in 2000 grew 14.2 per cent to reach 166,5 billion yuan (US$199.9 billion). The city is still in the lead in exports and per capita GDP among all the large and medium-sized cities in China.
Shanghai's 2000 GDP stood at 455.12 billion yuan. Guangzhou claims 3rd place with its GDP exceeding 230 billion yuan. Tianjin and Chongqing, the two municipalities which follow Shenzhen in the GDP ranking, generated GDP of 163.94 billion yuan and 159 billion yuan respectively.
GDP is a major index in measuring the economic strength of a city. Over the past two decades, Shenzhen's spectacular 31.2 per cent annual GDP growth rate has given the city ever-increasing economic strength. Shenzhen was in sixth place for the last few years of the 1990s, preceded by Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Tianjin and Chongqing municipalities.
With its economic strength growing and the living standards of its residents improving, Shenzhen is making greater contributions to the State. Last year, the city turned over 48.67 billion yuan in tax revenue to the State, some 69 per cent of the total taxes collected by the city.(SD News)
