Different celebrations

Yang Yunfei
THE Chinese Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the most important traditional Chinese festival of the year. It is a time for celebrations and family reunions.
Most Chinese city-dwellers will have at least seven days off for the holiday, which this year falls on January 24.
Coming as they do from almost every corner of the country, people here in China's first special economic zone have their own ways to celebrate the holiday.

I am 83 years old and have never thought before that I would spend the Spring Festival in Shenzhen one day.
My grandson owns an apartment here and asked me to come here for the holidays. I turned down his invitation at first, thinking that it would be a long and difficult journey for me. But my son and daughter-in-law suggested that I should go as Shenzhen is China's first special economic zone and it is quite different from other cities in the country, so I came.

I will stay in Shenzhen during the holidays. I really hope the seven days will give me a decent rest.
I had my hands full during the past year as I got involved in the development of a new product. I had to work a great deal of overtime even on Saturdays and Sundays. I think I am able to breathe easy now, so hopefully I can get enough sleep during the holidays.

My parents will come to Shenzhen for a family reunion during the Spring Festival. Actually, I've long dreamed of bringing my parents to Shenzhen for a short stay in winter, since it's so much warmer than my native Chongqing. I got married three years ago, but my husband and I had to rent an apartment until we bought our apartment five months ago. I really hope my parents will have a pleasant Spring Festival here in Shenzhen.

I came to Shenzhen two months ago and am now working in a Sino-American joint venture. You know, English is widely used in my office and I am desperate to improve it. I decided not to go home this Spring Festival. I've already registered for an oral English training course and I want to avail myself of this opportunity to brush up on my English.

For the first time in my life, I will spend the Spring Festival alone, in a place thousands of miles away from my hometown in Sichuan. Actually I do not want to stay in Shenzhen during the holidays while the rest of my family celebrate the important festival of the year without me. But I have to. You know, it is so difficult to get a train ticket.
I plan to visit some commercial centres like Huaqiangbei during the holidays. I was very busy all year long and seldom left the factory where I live and work. To tell you the truth, I came to Shenzhen three years ago, but I'm still not familiar with the city. I have never visited the city's scenic spots such as Window of the World or China Fork Culture Villages, but I cannot afford to go.
