STATISTICS jointly released by the Shenzhen Tourism Bureau and the Statistics Bureau on Friday indicate that the city's income from tourism last year hit 30.16 billion yuan ($3.7 billion), representing 6.66 per cent of that of nationwide tourism income and 18 per cent of the city's GDP. It also represents an increase of 21.22 per cent over 1999.
A total of 42.94 million people visited SZ last year, up 18.18 per cent from 1999. Domestic guests numbered 22.62 million, representing a 21.22 per cent increase. The city received a total 20.31 million foreign guests, 13.62 per cent more than the number of the previous year.
Local tourism generated 18.449 billion yuan in RMB and US$1.411 billion in foreign exchange. Over 13.25 million visitors stayed overnight. About six million chose to stay in local hotels, pushing the occupancy rate up to 62.5 per cent, an increase of 4.57 per cent over the previous year.(Wu Yan)
