The Lost Weekend
Starring: Ray Milland, Jane Wyman, Philip Terry, Howard Da Silva, Doris Dowling
Synopsis: Don Birnam (Ray Milland) is an alcoholic and unsuccessful writer living off (依赖) his brother Wick's (Philip Terry) charity. After another failed attempt to fool his brother and his girlfriend, he is caught trying to sneak a drink and is left behind without a dime for the weekend when Wick goes away for a trip.
Nevertheless Birnam still hears the siren (诱人的) call of alcohol. First pilfering (偷窃) money that has been left for the maid, Birnam continues to steel, beg and guzzle (狂饮作乐) his way through Manhattan until he lands himself in the detox ward (戒瘾病房) at Bellevue.
The frightening images of Birnam's hallucinations (幻觉) are unforgettable. The Lost Weekend is an excellent film, one that examines the ravages (破坏) of alcoholism with a realism that is utterly compelling — and Ray Milland's lead performance is nothing short of amazing.
