a) previous 早先的
通常意示在时间或顺序上早先一些的，与later或following词义相对。
Have you any previous experience? 你有什么先前的经验吗？
You did better in your previous homework.
你先前的作业做得好一些。
b) prior 居先的
此词词义与previous类似，但带有另一层意思，即，由于是居先的而有权提出某种要求。
I must remind you of your prior commitment to the matter.
我必须提醒你先期对这件事所做出的承诺。
The strikers demanded a full implementation of a prior arrangement.
罢工者要求完全执行一项先期做出的安排。
c) antecedent 先前的，先时的
与previous一词近义，附加意味是：先前的与后随者之间有直接的因果关系。
Did you notice any sign antecedent to the accident?
这事故之前，你注意到什么迹象了吗？
Events antecedent to the war failed to serve as a warning of the threat.

d) former 早先的
