China to make deep-sea sub

AFTER the successful launch of unmanned spacecraft Shenzhou II has shown the country's ability to reach the outer space, China is about to make another scientific breakthrough, this time deep into the ocean.
Jin Xianglong, a Chinese scientist in East China's Zhejiang Province, said that China is ready to develop a deep-sea submarine, capable of operating at a depth of 2,000 metres.
According to Jin, an academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a researcher at the State Oceanic Administration, the plan to develop the deep-sea submarine has been listed as one of China's key research projects.
In addition to exploring outer space, China must strengthen its exploration of the deep sea, said Jin.
So far, only the United States, France, Japan and Russia have 2,000 metre submarine technology.(Xinhua)
