Private business booms

THE city registered 202,428 private businesses last year, an increase of more than 12 per cent over 1999, the SZ Municipal Industrial and Commercial Administration Bureau announced on Monday.
Of that number, 9,637 were newly-registered in 2000 and there were about 803 private enterprises founded each month, a sign that SZ's private businesses have entered an era of high-speed growth after a relatively stable period.
Statistics released from the bureau also indicated that the number of the city's private businesses took up 43 per cent of the city's total. Of the figure, 18,631 private businesses have about one to five million yuan of registered capital, amounting to 43 per cent of the total, while 1,232 have registered over five million yuan in capital.
The high-tech sector enjoyed favour among all these newly-registered private businesses last year while traditional industries such as trade and catering, though accounting for 3,090, or more than 32 per cent of the newly-registered firms, dropped by 13 per cent compared with 1999. About 60 per cent of the city's 297 newly-registered companies are engaged in the network sector.
A number of policies favouring the development of local private business worked out by the municipal government over the last two years were behind the speedy growth, experts said. The local government has taken measures to help ease troubles of private business owners such as irrational charges and capital raising, thereby creating a friendlier environment for private enterprise.
