A New Year's hand
|
ON Monday, a sailor of over 60 years of age warmly clasped the hands of the chief of the SZ Maritime Affairs Administration Bureau and said: "Thank you for the help you gave when we were in desperate need".
The veteran works on an oil tanker belonging to a company in Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province, eastern China. On arriving at SZ on January 14 carrying oil from Maoming, a city in western Guangdong province, the ship, which was running out of fuel, fresh water and food, was in dire straits. Unable to improve their situation, the crew asked for help from the SZ Maritime Affairs Administration Bureau. The bureau, in turn, contacted the ship's owner while sending people out to the ship. Six days later, the ship owner's staff came to SZ. But because of the bad economic conditions of their own company, these staffers could do little. So, on January 29, the SZ agency sent chicken, pork, rice, fuel and edible water over to the ship's crew, along with their best wishes for the Chinese Lunar New Year.
Currently, the ship is still docked in SZ, under the surveillance of SZ Maritime Affair Administration Bureau. (Wu Yan)
