Ex-official probed: Xinhua
|
XINHUA confirmed in a report on Wednesday that a former vice-mayor of Shenzhen was removed from his post and put under investigation for alleged corruption.
The report cited the unidentified vice-mayor, a former Customs director and a land resources official who was among the officials who were sacked during last year's anti-corruption campaign.
In its report last month thought to be the first to cover the case by a mainland newspaper, the South Metropolitan Daily identified the former vice-mayor as Wang Ju, who used to be in charge of the city's land resources.
The report also said a number of officials from the municipal land resources bureau were also implicated in Wang's case.
It did not give further details except describing the case as “lamentable”, as commented by Zhang Gaoli, secretary of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, and “serious”.
The Xinhua report also said authorities in Shenzhen handled 168 corruption cases involving 190 officials in 2000 and retrieved some 281 million yuan (US$33.72 million) of embezzled funds or bribes.
According to Xinhua, Zhang Gaoli recently asked the committee's commission for discipline inspection to make full use of its supervision functions, and differentiate mistakes from corruption.(SD News)
