Anna Sui: eccentric inspiration
|
ALL her collections have something in common: the decadent and whimsical touch of rock'n'roll that makes Anna Sui's designs adored by models and musicians.
Born in Detroit in 1955, this Chinese-American designer knew from a very early age that fashion would be a very significant part of her life.
The turning point of Anna's life, when she realized that she'd finally devote herself full-time to designing her own collection, came when several pieces of clothing she'd sold to Macy's appeared in the New York Times. This gutsy lady set up a sewing machine in her apartment and Anna Sui The Designer was born.
What made Anna's designs stand out was that her clothing never really blended in with what people were wearing at that time. In the early 90s her baby-doll dresses suddenly met with not only acceptance, but also wild approval. Coinciding perfectly with the grunge movement of that era, Anna's baby-doll dresses were the foundation of her success.
In 1991 Anna finally had her own show for the first time. It was a smashing success, introducing to the world a line of wild 70s-inspired mini-dresses and vinyl pants that were neither neutral or typical, but a “pastiche of hip and haute styles".
Since then, Anna has been on a roller coaster of velvet, tweeds, sequins, feathered hats and beaded bags. Her designs were hailed as a combination of “madness of creativity" and “methodical research". (SD-Agencies)
