Reporters invited
BEIJING: Chinese and overseas reporters are invited to cover the upcoming annual sessions of the National People's Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), it was announced yesterday.
The Fourth Session of the Ninth National People's Congress and the Fourth Session of the Ninth National Committee of the CPPCC are to be convened on March 5 and March 3 in Beijing respectively, announced the general offices of the NPC Standing Committee and the CPPCC National Committee.
Business plan
HONG KONG: A survey conducted by a Hong Kong real estate consultancy firm indicates that 13.3 per cent of Hong Kong retailers want to establish businesses on the Chinese mainland, while one fourth thinks their plans will materialize within three years.
Shenzhen is ranked as their first choice to set up a business by retailers surveyed. Guangzhou followed as second and Shanghai third.
NMD plans defended
MUNICH: Despite Europe's worries, the United States will adhere to the proposed National Missile Defence (NMD) system, US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said on Saturday at the 37th Munich Security Conference. The NMD plans "threat no other countries", Rumsfeld said.
Coalition announced
BANGKOK: Leaders of Thai Rak Thai Party, Chart Thai Party and New Aspiration Party announced in Bangkok yesterday they would form a coalition to lead the next Thai government, which is expected to take power later this month.
The three parties will command 325 seats in the 500-member House of Representatives, allowing the coalition to prevent any no-confidence motion against the government, which require the support of at least 200 members of parliament.
Rebels surrender
LUANDA: At least 600 rebels from the National Union for Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) have recently surrendered themselves to the Angolan authorities in the central Huambo province, the Angola Press reported over the weekend.
The report said that 176 of them surrendered with their guns.
