Latest album: Lovers Rock
Helen Folasade Adu was born in Ibadan, Nigeria, but grew up mostly in Essex, England, where she spent her early years listening to legendary soul artists like Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye and Donny Hathaway. She studied fashion at St Martin's School Of Art and later started singing with some friends she knew from school.
She embarked on her own career in music with her debut album Diamond Life in 1984. Since then, she's enjoyed hit singles and multi-platinum sales all over the world, and she's become known for her smooth, soulful vocals. On Lovers Rock, her first album of new material in eight years, Sade shows that her voice has as much warmth and emotion as ever.
