Mainland journalists plan Taiwan trip

TWO journalists with the Xinhua News Agency will leave for Taiwan tomorrow to spend a month conducting interviews in the island province, the Hong Kong Commercial Daily reported on Monday.
Fan Liqing, one of the two journalists whose applications have been approved, said she would go to Taiwan with Chen Binhua tomorrow via Hong Kong.
Fan is currently the deputy director of the Hong Kong and Taiwan department of the Xinhua News Agency and was among the first group of mainland journalists who went to do interviews in Taiwan.
While being interviewed by other reporters, Fan said she wished to make some contribution to promoting journalistic exchanges across the Taiwan Straits so as to enhance mutual understanding. She believed that journalistic exchanges would be conducive to cross-Straits relations.
Fan was quite frank with the pressure she felt, saying her biggest hope was that everything goes well with her work. She disclosed that her interviews would not be limited to cross-Straits relations. We would report on all the major news, she said, including press conferences, regardless of the nature of who is holding the conference.
Asked whether she was concerned about becoming an interviewee instead of an interviewer once she arrives in Taiwan, Fan answered yes. She said she hoped to be considered a fellow journalist, not a newsworthy person.
Fan will first go to Hong Kong tomorrow to get the certificate which will allow her to enter Taiwan and was expected to arrive in Taiwan late tomorrow if things go smoothly. She would make her home in one of the major hotels in Taipei during her one-month stay.
Besides Fu and her colleague, journalists from the People's Daily, Chinese Central Television and Radio China International will also be allowed to be stationed in Taiwan. (SD News)
