ZTE CDMA licensed

Liu Fuzhong
SHENZHEN-BASED ZTE Corporation, a leading telecommunications equipment manufacturer, has become China's first telecom company licensed to provide entire CDMA (code division multiple access) service. The technology is believed by many to be the wave of the future in mobile telecommunication technology.
According to Zhu Jinwen, vice-president of ZTE, the company is now the only provider of entire CDMA systems and terminal products.
The licensed products include base station transmitters, control systems, mobile switching and locating systems, which are core CDMA technologies.
Earlier a panel of experts from the Ministry of Information Technology appraised the company's proposal for a CDMA system in China, saying that the plan meets the domestic needs of digitalization of cell phone service.
"Only a few countries have mastered the entire CDMA technology," Zhu said. "ZTE stands at the cutting edge in this area."
At the same time, the company has also improved the compatibility of the system with other telecommunications operators. Now the ZTE system is able to connect with CDMA sub-stations offered by Ericsson, Nortel and Chinese telecom companies.
One other breakthrough the company scored was the separation of the SIM card from the handset. The company produced the first such handsets in the world in October last year. The new development makes it possible to diversify and personalize the terminal handsets.
Industry experts believe that CDMA technology provides a level playing field for competition, while the successful development of CDMA technology will give ZTE an advantage in competing in the international marketplace.
