WEF computers hacked in Davos

MYSTERIOUS computer hackers breached the computer system of the World Economic Forum (WEF) during its annual meeting last month in the eastern Swiss town of Davos.
The WEF's head of communication, Charles McLean, confirmed that some of the secret data had been stored on CD-Rom and was anonymously leaked to Switzerland's German-language newspaper, SonntagsZeitung.
The computer pirates reportedly gained access to 1,400 credit card numbers of WEF participants, as well as private telephone numbers, e-mail addresses, user names and passwords.
According to reports, the stolen data included information about former US President Bill Clinton, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Microsoft chief Bill Gates.
Forum organizers said that they are treating the affair as a criminal act. "We told the police right away," they said. The police took the incident very seriously and are bringing in external experts to clear up the matter as soon as possible.
They have said that they suspect the hackers were anti-globalization opponents of the conference.
McLean said all of the forum participants have been informed of the security breach. Credit card firms around the world have begun cancelling all of the potentially effected cards.
