City plugs into conference economy

IT has been remarked that too many conferences and exhibitions are held in China. However, they can be profitable and serve to promote the international image of the host city, and this is certainly the case with Shenzhen.
This is the view held by Leo J Q Liao, executive chairman of the World Chinese Entrepreneurs General Association (WCEGA), at an exclusive interview with Shenzhen Daily on Sunday.
In recent years a growing number of cities have discovered an economic model which has come to be called the conference and exhibition economy. Shenzhen has worked hard to develop its share of the industry, as highlighted by its annual China Hi-Tech Fair, which began in 1999. Yet market potential for this in Shenzhen is still great, declared Liao.
In his view, Shenzhen should be seen from a wider perspective — the greater Pearl River Delta area, including Guangdong and Hong Kong, as Shenzhen, bordering Hong Kong, is right in the heart of the region that boasts the biggest metropolitan group in Asia, biggest processing base in the world and fastest-developing area in China.
He also said that for it to become an excellent conference and exhibition centre, Shenzhen should not only act as an excellent host, but also a good sponsor and a good participant in activities held in other cities, particularly in other countries.
Only by so doing can a city fully tap its market potential and promote its international image.
