Villagers study abroad
|
IN SZ's Futian Village, 11 young people have left their homes to pursue studies in the UK. Among them is the son of Huang Guoyan, head of the village. With the rapid growth of science and technology, Huang and his villagers have keenly felt the importance of learning.
A year ago, when his son neared graduation from a local electronic and technological school, Huang had a serious talk with his wife that resulted in the decision to send their boy abroad for further studies. "The yearly cost is 150,000 RMB (about 18,000 USD), quite a sum for my family," Huang said, "but we still consider it a wise decision, for my son can learn advanced computer technology there."
After spending some time in a language school in Manchester, the young man moved to a public school to prepare for his university education. According to Huang, his boy progressed rapidly after going abroad and matured emotionally as well.
Many families in the village sent their children abroad. Huang Shaohui, son of an entrepreneur, is now a sophomore at a top British university. Another young villager has returned with a doctorate and presently works with an investment consultation firm.
Earlier this year, Magistrate of Futian District Xie Baiquan paid a special visit to the youths while on a business trip in the UK and encouraged them to study hard.
Of the 200 young residents in Futian village, around 40 have enrolled in universities in China and abroad.
