Visit stresses ties

Winton Dong
TWO Guangzhou-based British diplomats, economic consul Gareth Hoar and cultural and education consul Justin Gilbert, popped by the Shenzhen Special Zone Press Group on Wednesday, at the invitation of the Shenzhen Municipal Foreign Affairs Office.
The main purpose of their visit was to seek co-operation with the press group, the most influential press media in Shenzhen.
“It is of great significance for us to strengthen ties with the authoritative media in this city, one of the most active export-oriented economies in the country,” said Justin Gilbert during his meeting with Du Jixuan, deputy editor-in-chief of the Shenzhen Special Zone Press Group.
Du expressed the hope that the British Consulate-General in Guangzhou could help the press group enhance information, personnel exchanges and mutual technological support with its counterparts in Britain.
Gareth Hoar, similarly, stressed that the United Kingdom can offer tailor-made courses, usually of short duration and targeted at practical knowledge and skills, to editors and reporters in the city.
According to Gilbert, an increasing number of Chinese students are choosing to study in Britain. Latest statistics suggest the British Government issued 8,500 visas to Chinese students last year compared with 2,500 in 1997.
