LONDON: Jan-Ove Waldner, one of the greatest table tennis players of all time, went down to a shock defeat in the last 16 of the English Open on Saturday.
At the age of 35, Waldner, who created a sensation last year when he helped Sweden regain the world team title from China, looked slow and harassed as he was beaten in straight games.
Waldner's conqueror was the transplanted Japanese player, Seiji Iseki, better known to some as the former world doubles champion from China Wei Qinggang, who, despite his 38 years, outwitted Waldner 21-16, 21-16, 21-19.
