Sir--I was so excited after reading the story titled "Family reunions on the Island of Kinmen", published on Page one of Shenzhen Daily Weekend last Friday.
I was born in Xiamen and lived there for more than 20 years before moving to Shenzhen. In that time, I witnessed the inconvenience that people suffered when paying visits to their relatives across the Taiwan Straits. Five years ago, a young fishing girl from Kinmen, driven by a storm to Xiamen, married a lad who lives in the same street I lived. For the past five years she has been unable to return to Kinmen for a visit, nor has her three-year-old son seen his relatives on the island. Though she enjoys her new life in Xiamen, she misses her parents in Kinmen. I wish she was among the visitors on the ferry "Gulangyu" who went there last week.
It is wonderful news for the people living across the Taiwan Straits that the travel ban has been eased.
