Metro project starts
|
CONSTRUCTION on the long-anticipated Shenzhen subway system will begin in earnest next month, focusing on stations and tracks along Shennan Thoroughfare.
The first phase of the project, involving a total investment of 10.58 billion yuan (US$1.27 billion) and 18 stations, is expected to be completed in four years. Public bidding for some projects was completed before the Spring Festival.
Both Shenzhen and Hong Kong authorities have agreed to build a cross-border walkway to link Huanggang metro station with Hong Kong, which will become the second passage at Huanggang Checkpoint. With this new walkway, passenger flows at the checkpoint will be expected to rise to the same level as Luohu Checkpoint within 10-20 years. (Alfred Zhang)
